SUBJECT: Kingsport Detectives Investigating Shooting Incident at Miller Village Apartments (Update #2)

GENERAL NARRATIVE
Update #2: Both suspects in the July 22, 2020 Miller Village Apartments shooting incident are now in custody. Dakota Shelton and his unnamed juvenile accomplice turned themselves in to the Kingsport Police Department today without incident. As of the time of issuance of this news release, they remain incarcerated pending arraignment.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation; therefore, no additional details will be released at this time.

As previously released:

Update: The July 22, 2020 shooting incident at Miller Village Apartments in Kingsport has been under extensive investigation by the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division since the date it occurred. As a result, two suspects (one adult and one juvenile) have been identified and charges have been filed.

A warrant has been obtained, charging Dakota Shelton (19 years of age) with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault (2 counts), and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

A juvenile petition has been obtained, charging a 17 year old male juvenile accomplice with Aggravated Assault. Due to privacy laws regarding juvenile offenders, his identity will not be publicly released at this time.

Both suspects remain wanted and at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.

The pair are believed to possibly be traveling in a red 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 2-door coupe displaying Tennessee registration BTH-797. A photograph of Mr. Shelton, as well as a stock photo of a similar vehicle, have been included in this release.

Anyone who sees Mr. Shelton (possibly accompanied by a 17 year old black male juvenile) or their vehicle or may possibly know where they can be located is asked to promptly contact Detectives in the K.P.D. The 32 year old gunshot victim has since been discharged from the hospital.

As this remains an active and ongoing investigation, no additional details will be released at this time.

As previously released:

On July 22, 2020 at approximately 10:00 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers and Detectives responded to Miller Village Apartments, located at 3844 Eastline Drive in Kingsport in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival they located two seriously injured victims outside one of the apartment buildings. Both victims had reportedly been assaulted inside one of the apartments.

One of the victims, a 22 year old male, had suffered severe lacerations from allegedly being “pistol whipped,” while the other victim, a 32 year old male, had sustained a gunshot wound. Both victims were transported to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. The 22 year old male was treated and released; however, as of the time of issuance of this release, the 32 year old male remains hospitalized in serious condition.

This incident remains under active investigation by the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division with charges pending. As such, no further details, to include possible motive(s), suspect name(s), and/or description(s), will be released at this time. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available, but only at an appropriate point in the investigation.
