This Halloween night, October 31, 2019, at 10:00 PM, a 2011 Kingsport Police Department homicide case will be featured on the Investigation Discovery Channel (Charter/Spectrum channel 75 and 126) in an episode titled “Home Sweet Homicide.”
This episode will feature the investigation surrounding the brutal 2011 homicide of Betty Sue Short for which John Slemp was ultimately convicted of First Degree Murder and is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
On October 16, 2011 at approximately 12:00 Noon, the deceased body of Betty Sue Short, 65 years of age, was discovered inside her apartment, located at 361 Barnett Drive, Apartment #2, in Kingsport. The initial assessment revealed that Mrs. Short had been bludgeoned to death in an extremely violent manner by an unknown assailant.
Lieutenant Frank Light (retired) and Sergeant Randy Murray, with the full support of the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division, utilized good old fashioned police work to relentlessly seek out the culprit of this crime. After a lengthy investigation, consisting of countless man hours and nearly 100 interviews across four states, Kingsport Police Detectives made an arrest in Mrs. Short’s murder.
On February 25, 2014 at approximately 4:00 PM, Jonathan Lynn Slemp was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, and Especially Aggravated Robbery. |
