NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Kingsport Police Saddened to Report the Passing of Retired K-9 Macho
DATE: July 22, 2019
GENERAL NARRATIVE
The Kingsport Police Department is saddened to report that on July 20, 2019 K.P.D. K-9 Macho (retired) passed away at the age of 13.

K-9 Macho was a Belgian Malinois acquired by K.P.D. in 2008. He was initially assigned to K-9 Handler Mike Burnette and later transferred to K-9 Handler Billy Boyd in 2011. That year, he received the Top Dog award in USPCA (United States Police Canine Association) Region 8.

He maintained certifications through both USPCA and NNDDA (National Narcotic Detector Dog Association) throughout his entire career. During his tenure he was responsible for countless drug finds and fugitive apprehensions resulting in numerous arrests.

He retired from active duty in 2014 and had been living the less exciting, but more relaxed, life of a pet with his former handler, Officer Boyd, until his passing.
