On March 12, 2018 at approximately 5:00 pm, ten days following the crash on West Stone Drive at Lawson Drive in Kingsport, Tony L. McInturff succumbed to his injuries and died. He had been hospitalized in critical condition since the date of the crash. The investigation into the March 2nd crash that ultimately resulted in his death remains open and active by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit with charges pending. As such, no additional details can or will be released at this time.

On March 2, 2018 at approximately 6:30 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to a major motor vehicle collision on West Stone Drive at Lawson Drive in Kingsport. Due to the severity of injuries involved, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit was summoned to the scene to take the lead in the investigation. Their findings are as follows:
A 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, driven and solely occupied by Tony L. McInturff, was westbound on West Stone Drive and was slowing or stopped for a red light at the intersection with Lawson Drive. A 2005 Mack tractor-trailer, driven and solely occupied by Sean Carrington Phipps, was also westbound on West Stone Drive and was traveling behind the Subaru.
The tractor-trailer failed to slow or stop in time and rear-ended the Subaru. Mr. McInturff was severely injured in the crash and was transported to an area healthcare facility for emergency medical treatment. He has since been admitted and is listed in critical condition. Mr. Phipps was not injured.
