NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Detectives Ask Additional Witnesses to Hog Wild Saloon Homicide to Come Forward
DATE: March 7, 2018
CASE #: 18-006623
GENERAL NARRATIVE
Kingsport Police Department Detectives are asking for any additional witnesses to the March 2, 2018 homicide inside the Hog Wild Saloon, who have not yet spoken to law enforcement officials, to please come forward. The Hog Wild Saloon was packed with numerous (potentially over 100) patrons at the time of the incident, and many of these individuals could not have helped but to see the shooting that transpired in the main room of this establishment. Witnesses are asked to contact the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division as soon as possible at 423-229-9429.

As previously released:

On March 2, 2018 at approximately 2:00 AM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a shooting incident at the Hog Wild Saloon, located at 1009 West Stone Drive in Kingsport. Multiple first responders, to include Kingsport Police Department Patrol Officers, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The initial responding Officer had to navigate through a large number of frantic and agitated patrons to enter the establishment. When he was able to gain entry into the main room of the facility, he located a black male adult gunshot victim, later identified as Brett D. Rodgers, lying unresponsive on the floor. A citizen was already performing CPR on Mr. Rodgers.

The first backup Officer soon arrived, and a second black male adult gunshot victim (identity will not be released for his safety) was soon located in the same room. His injuries did not appear nearly as critical as those of Mr. Rodgers. Sullivan County E.M.S. soon arrived, and promptly transported both victims to an area medical facility.

Mr. Rodgers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased soon after arrival at the hospital. The second gunshot victim received emergency medical treatment for serious injuries. He has since been admitted and is currently listed in stable condition.

The initially unidentified suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival. Over the course of the investigation that followed, Detectives from the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division uncovered information and evidence to positively identify the shooter as a 16 year old black male juvenile from Bristol, Virginia.

Earlier this afternoon, he was taken into custody on a Sullivan County Juvenile Court Attachment for 1) 1st Degree Murder and 2) Aggravated Assault at his residence in Bristol, Virginia with assistance from Law Enforcement Officers from that jurisdiction. He remains in custody awaiting extradition back to Tennessee. Due to privacy laws protecting juvenile records, his name will not be released.

While inside the Hog Wild Saloon, first responders noticed several obvious safety concerns and potential city ordinance and building code violations. The appropriate authorities were notified, and based upon their preliminary observations have taken action to temporarily close the business while these safety issues can be thoroughly investigated and addressed.

This remains an open, active, and extremely fluid investigation by the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division. As such, and in the interest of a successful future prosecution of the individual responsible, no additional details, to include a possible motive, can or will be released at this point and time.
