Crash Investigators have determined that there were two vehicles involved that were coincidentally both black Chevrolet Blazer mid-sized sport utility vehicles from the late 1990s. A 1996 black Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Brian E. Johnson, was eastbound on East Stone Drive while a 1998 black Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Brandon O. Beavers and occupied by front seat passenger, Tiffany L. Moore, was traveling westbound on East Stone Drive.

The two vehicles were approaching the intersection with Stonebrook Place from opposite directions when, for unknown reasons, the 1996 Blazer swerved to the left, crossed the center turn lane, entered the oncoming traffic lanes and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes until it collided head-on with the 1998 Blazer.

Ms. Moore was killed in the crash. Mr. Beavers sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area healthcare facility for emergency medical treatment. Despite being seriously injured as well, Mr. Johnson fled the scene on foot, running up Arbutus Avenue toward Bloomingdale Pike. He was soon apprehended by a responding K.P.D. Patrol Officer.

Mr. Johnson was transported to an area healthcare facility for emergency medical treatment where he was ultimately admitted. While he remains hospitalized, he continues to be under police supervision and has been charged with a litany of criminal offenses to include the following:

1) Aggravated Vehicular Homicide

2) Vehicular Homicide

3) Aggravated Assault

4) Vehicular Assault

5) Driving Under the Influence (4th Offense)

6) Driving on a Revoked License (1st Offense)

7) Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death and Personal Injury

8) Possession of Stolen Property (Stolen License Plate on Vehicle)

9) Possession of Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia (Marijuana Pipe)

10) Failure to Comply with Financial Responsibility (No Insurance)

11) Also wanted on multiple preexisting outstanding arrest warrants from other jurisdictions

As this incident remains under active investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit, no additional details will be released at this time.

As previously released:

On February 22, 2018 as of approximately 11:15 AM, all lanes of East Stone Drive at Stonebrook Place in Kingsport are back open for traffic. The investigation into the serious crash that resulted in the earlier roadway closure is still ongoing by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. Additional details will be released at the appropriate point in the investigation.

As previously released:

On February 22, 2018 at approximately 6:40 AM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was notified of a serious motor vehicle collision on East Stone Drive near the intersection of Stonebrook Place in Kingsport. Officers are currently on scene investigating the crash.

All westbound lanes of East Stone Drive are completely shut down for the time being and will likely stay that was for a couple of hours. Eastbound lanes are currently flowing, but will likely become congested due to heavy commuter traffic.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and plan an alternate route. Motorists already in the immediate area are encouraged to exercise caution and patience, obey all traffic instructions, and drive with a heightened sense of situational awareness.
