GENERAL NARRATIVE
On January 2, 2018 at approximately 8:45 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to the area of Oak Street in Kingsport at the request of the Asheboro, North Carolina Police Department to attempt to locate a 2011 Hyundai Tucson that had been reported stolen from that jurisdiction. The investigating agency had received information that the vehicle was possibly at that location in the possession of the victim’s ex-husband, Elvet Reid.

Upon arrival, Kingsport Officers soon located the stolen vehicle parked and unoccupied in the parking lot of Maple Oak Apartments, located at 818 Oak Street. Mr. Reid was soon found inside apartment 327 at this location and was in possession of the keys to the stolen vehicle. He was subsequently arrested for Possession of Stolen Property (Vehicle) over $10,000. The vehicle was towed from the scene at the owner’s request to be released to her at her later convenience.

While inside apartment 327, Patrol Officers had occasion to come into contact with Anthony Knight (resident) and Detrone Royal (visitor). A small amount of a substance believed to be Crack Cocaine was noticed in plain sight. Also in plain sight was a backpack. Upon inquiry, neither Knight nor Royal would claim ownership of the backpack. Detectives from the K.P.D. Vice and Narcotics Unit were called to the scene.

As the backpack was inside Knight’s residence, he did give consent to the Detectives to search the pack. Inside the pack, Detectives located an additional 17 ounces (over a pound) of a substance also believed to be Crack Cocaine. Also inside the pack was an assortment of unlawful drug paraphernalia and a handgun. Further investigation revealed surveillance video showing Royal carrying the backpack while entering the apartment in the company of Knight. Knight also acknowledged allowing Royal to stay at his apartment.

A total of nearly 500 grams of what is believed to be Crack Cocaine was seized. With an estimated street value of $100 per gram, the total street value of the seized drugs was estimated at nearly $50,000. The handgun and nearly $1,700 in cash, believed to be proceeds from prior drug transactions, were also seized.

Knight and Royal were both arrested and charged with Possession of over 300 grams of Crack Cocaine for Resale within 1,000 feet of a Municipal Park, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Possession of Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia.
