Second Interstate 81 Crash Necessitates Another Helicopter Landing and More Extensive Road Closure

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On April 24, 2017 at approximately 12:45 PM, a second crash on southbound Interstate 81 was reported in the area of mile-marker 65. This second crash involves at least two, possibly three, tractor trailers. As a result of serious injuries sustained in this second crash, an additional medical transport helicopter has been deployed to the scene.
The Kingsport Police Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol both have personnel on scene. As a result of these crashes, motorists can expect an extensive and extended roadway closure. TDOT has been requested to implement detour protocol as soon as possible.
To reiterate, motorists should make every possible effort to plan an alternate route, and avoid this area altogether for the foreseeable future. Anyone already in the immediate area is asked to remain patient and alert, and to follow all traffic directions.
Officers are still in the preliminary stages of their investigation into this second crash as well. Additional information will be released as it develops.
