SUBJECT: Kingsport Detectives Investigating Early Sunday Morning Attempted Armed Robbery
DATE: July 26, 2016
CASE #: 16-015579
On July 24, 2016 at approximately 2:30 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to the 1200 block of Chestnut Street in reference to an attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault, and vandalism that had just occurred. Upon arrival, they spoke with two victims who advised that four black males in their late 20s to early 30s had attempted to rob them at gunpoint.

The victims stated that they had fallen asleep in their car, but were awakened when one of the suspects opened one of their car doors. The suspect initially feigned concern and asked if they were alright. During the conversation, the other three suspects approached with their faces concealed and the conversation turned confrontational.

One of the suspects produced what the victims genuinely believed to be a silver colored handgun, pointed it at the victims and ordered them to empty their pockets. In fear for their lives, the victims fled toward their house. One of the suspects fired multiple shots at the fleeing victims, striking one of the victims in the back as well as hitting the house.

The suspects also shattered the windows of the victims’ car, then fled, running east on Chestnut Street. Based upon evidence collected at the scene, an assessment of the damage to the house, and only minor injuries sustained by the victim, Detectives believe that the handgun in question was some type of air-powered pellet pistol and not an actual firearm.

This remains an open and active investigation by the K.P.D. Criminal Investigation Division, and the suspects remain unidentified and at large. Anyone who may know their identities or whereabouts is asked to contact Detectives at 423-229-9429 or call Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.
