|On March 2, 2016, just prior to midnight, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers, supplemented by Crash Investigators from the K.P.D. Traffic Unit, responded to a single motor vehicle collision on North John B. Dennis Highway in Kingsport.
When first responders arrived on scene, the driver, identified as Gillis J. Leblanc, was determined to be in full cardiac arrest. Mr. Leblanc was immediately transported by Sullivan County E.M.S. to Indian Path Medical Center for emergency treatment. His wife, Mildred D. Leblanc, was a passenger in the vehicle, and was not injured in the crash; however, she did accompany him to the hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Leblanc succumbed to his medical emergency and died after arrival at the hospital.
Further investigation revealed that prior to the crash, Mr. Leblanc had experienced chest pains and was in the process of driving himself to the hospital. While southbound on North John B. Dennis Highway, Mr. Leblanc slumped over the steering wheel and became unresponsive. Ms. Leblanc reached across and attempted to steer the still-moving vehicle; however, she was unable to overcome the weight of her husband on the steering wheel. The vehicle left the right side of the roadway and crashed into a landscaped area on the property of 2400 North John B. Dennis Highway.
This crash remains under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit; however, at this time there is no reason to believe it is anything other than medical-related.
