NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: K.P.D. Investigating Suspect Who Stole Cell Phone and Demanded Ransom from the Owner
DATE: February 10, 2016
CASE #: 16-002647
GENERAL NARRATIVE
On February 8, 2016 at 3:45 AM, an individual was in a waiting room at Holston Valley Medical Center, located at 130 West Ravine Road in Kingsport. The individual was from out of town and was at the hospital visiting a sick relative. He had placed his Samsung Galaxy Prime Core smart phone and a Samsung portable wireless charger on a table near where he was sitting.

The individual left the waiting room for a moment, but when he returned, his phone and charger were missing. He deactivated the stolen phone and purchased a replacement, activating it with the same number. A couple of days later, the victim began receiving calls on his replacement phone from someone demanding that he pay ransom money in exchange for the return of his stolen phone. The cell phone and wireless charger have a combined value in excess of $500.

A review of hospital surveillance video footage showed a white male suspect steal the phone after the victim left the room. Two photos of the suspect taken from that footage have been included in this release. Anyone who recognizes him is asked to contact Detectives in the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division at 423-229-9429 or call Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.
