|SUBJECT:||K.P.D. Responds to Serious Single Vehicle Rollover Crash|
|DATE:||October 21, 2014|
|On October 21, 2014 at approximately 3:10 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol and Traffic Units responded to a single vehicle rollover crash in the 1200 block of Catawba Street in Kingsport. The first arriving officers located a 2006 Mazda Tribute compact sport utility vehicle resting on the passenger side with the driver, Regina L. Bailey, lying on the roadway underneath the vehicle. First responders from the Kingsport Fire Department, Kingsport Life Saving Crew, and Sullivan County E.M.S. arrived on scene, rescued Ms. Bailey from underneath the vehicle, and transported her to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.
An investigation into the crash by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit revealed that the vehicle was eastbound on Catawba Street when, for unknown reasons, it veered to the left across the center line. The vehicle overrode the curb on the opposite side of the street and struck a tree in the yard of 1224 Catawba Street, causing the vehicle to roll over onto the passenger side. The events leading up to this crash are still under investigation.
Ms. Bailey was not wearing her seatbelt and was partially ejected as the vehicle rolled onto its side. Had she been properly restrained, her injuries would likely have been lessened or even prevented altogether. The Kingsport Police Department continues to stress the importance of wearing seatbelts. Not only is it the law, but it might just save a life.
