General Narrative

The Kingsport Police Department has made an arrest in a 2011 homicide investigation.

On October 16, 2011 at approximately 12:00 Noon, the deceased body of Betty Sue Short, 65 years of age, was discovered inside her apartment, located at 361 Barnett Drive, Apartment #2, in Kingsport. The initial assessment revealed that Mrs. Short had been bludgeoned to death in an extremely violent manner by an unknown assailant.

Sgt. Frank Light and Detective Randy Murray, with the full support of the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division, utilized good old fashioned police work to relentlessly seek out the culprit in this crime. After a lengthy investigation consisting of countless man hours and nearly 100 interviews over four states, Kingsport Police Detectives have made an arrest in Mrs. Short’s murder. On February 25, 2014 at approximately 4:00 PM, Jonathan Lynn Slemp was taken into custody at the Kingsport Justice Center without incident.

His charges include:

1) 1st Degree Murder

2) Felony Murder

3) Especially Aggravated Robbery

This is the second cold case solved by this pair of investigators within the past few months. Their hard work and due diligence is highly commendable and has certainly paid off. It is the hope of the Kingsport Police Department that the arrest of Mr. Slemp brings some degree of closure to the friends and family of Mrs. Short.
