General Narrative

The Kingsport Police Department is attempting to identify a car thief who abandoned his bicycle and stole an automobile at a local grocery store.

On October 28, 2013 at approximately 3:05 PM, an individual parked a Honda Accord in the parking lot of Kroger, located at 1664 East Stone Drive in Kingsport. The vehicle was left unlocked with the keys in the ignition while the owner went inside the grocery store.

While the owner was inside, another individual rode his bicycle by the Honda and noticed that the keys were in the ignition. The temptation was apparently more than he could bear, so he parked his bicycle beside the store, returned to the Honda, entered the unlocked vehicle, and drove away.

The suspect is a white male, possibly in his 20s, of average height and slim build, with short, dark hair. A photo of him is included in this release, as is a link to surveillance video posted on the K.P.D. YouTube channel showing the suspect leaving the store prior to the theft.

Also included in this release is a stock photo of a similar vehicle to the one that was stolen.

The vehicle is a black 1993 Honda Accord 4-door sedan last seen bearing TN license plate 297WRD. The vehicle has two penguin stickers displayed in the rear window and has pre-existing damage on the front passenger-side door. The approximate value of the Honda is $1,400.

Anyone who may be able to help Detectives identify this individual or locate the stolen car is asked to contact the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division at 423-229-9429 or Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111.

The K.P.D. Community Relations and Crime Prevention Unit continually stresses the importance of removing keys and locking vehicles to deter motor vehicle theft and other crimes.
